Small Firms in the Japanese Economy
Published in Hardcover by Cambridge University Press (April, 1997)
Author: D. H. Whittaker
Average review score:

Small firms and human beings
This is a very rich account of the role of Japanese small firms in the economy at large and in the lives of the people who make them work. Mr. Whittaker obviously understands much both about Japan and about human motivation. The focus on the latter will very much help anyone seeking to make cross-border comparisons. (There are a few portions the general reader will want to skip over, and so he/she should do just that.)

Social Problems: A World at Risk
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall College Div (November, 1994)
Authors: Michael P. Soroka, George J. Bryjak, and George J. Bryjak
Average review score:

A Good, Comprehensive Textbook for Sociology Students
This textbook offers a concise yet comprehensive treatment of social problems that is appropriate for third- or fourth-year college students. Complex problems such as domestic violence, racism, inequalities in the distribution of health care, and environmental degredation are treated with a deep and nuanced understanding of political and social realities, helping students to comprehend how and why these problems are interrelated. Although much attention is paid to social problems in the United States, the authors do not neglect a comparative view of these problems in other countries, providing a global perspective that is integrated throughout the book. This textbook isn't fancy--there is a moderate number of photographs, and a large number of pages with text only. You won't find here the cute little "sidebars" or four-color graphics that cause other textbooks to be so outlandishly expensive. But if an economical textbook that offers a thorough treatment of social issues is what's needed, you won't be disappointed with this one. I assigned this textbook to my third-year sociology class last year, and will do so again. I highly recommend this book.

Social Psychology Across Cultures (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Allyn & Bacon (17 July, 1998)
Authors: Peter Bevington Smith and Michael Harris Bond
Average review score:

A very useful book for expatriates
I am an expatriate manager & teacher, researcher in cross-cultural business issues, and teach international marketing and management at a university undergraduate level, in English, to students in non-English-speaking countries. This book is particularly useful to me personaly in assisting in my understanding and interactions with my studens, university colleagues & administration, and my neighbors. I have waded through many dense, poorly- written tomes in this area of study; however, the Smith and Bond book is refreshingly interesting, well-written and useful, with helpful inserts, cartoons, and comment boxes adding to one's insight. I exerpt and adapt frequently from the book in my courses in Managing the International Enterprise and Cross-Cultural Issues in Management. The book is useful for both university education, training exptraite managers, and for reading and reference by thoughtful expatriates.

Sociology: The United States in a Global Community
Published in Paperback by Wadsworth Publishing (04 August, 1999)
Authors: Joan Ferrante and Joan Ferrante-Wallace
Average review score:

Multicultural Introduction to Sociology
I have used Ferrante's text now in my introductory sociology classes for over five years. In its 4th ed., the text has been greatly recieved in all my classes. What is so different about the text is that it has an international and multicultural perspective. While examining the same concepts found in most introductory texts, Ferrante's work explores them within a wider, international context, all the while providing a comparative look at American society. Each chapter takes the reader to a different part of the globe, providing both excellent historical and contemporary examples. Most importantly (especially for my students), the text allows the instructor to introduce sociology and diversity at the same time. Not only timely, but imperative in this emerging global, postmodern era. You'll get a lot of miles out of this one!
